Donor stories
What it was actually like, in their words.
Real donor cases: what they gave, what we handled, and what the paperwork looked like at the end.
Why we publish these
Every one of these started with a phone call
Most people who call us have never donated anything larger than a bag of clothes, and the first question is almost always the same: what will this actually involve? These accounts answer that better than we can. They are grouped by what was given, and they are printed as the donors wrote them.
You will notice appraisals come up often. For any non‑cash gift you intend to claim above $5,000 the IRS requires a qualified independent appraisal, arranged and paid for by the donor. That is the one cost we cannot cover, and the donors below describe how they handled it.

If you have donated to Giving Center, we would like to hear how it went. We publish first name, what you gave and your state — nothing else, and nothing at all without your say‑so.

Donating the family farm felt like giving away a lifetime of work by my father. Giving Center handled the title transfer, worked with our lawyer, and took care of the USDA paperwork so we didn’t get stuck in bureaucracy. They were very professional, answered every question, and sent the tax receipt our accountant needed after the farm was sold. Seeing the farm continue to feed local families made the decision easy and we are glad it went to a good cause.

When my mother passed, she left me her house and belongings and I knew I couldn’t face months of repairs and strangers walking through the rooms. I called Giving Center and a really nice lady named Stephanie explained the process in plain language. I arranged and paid for an appraisal, then they coordinated with a local title company and a mobile notary so I did not have to leave town. Within three weeks the deed was recorded, the keys were handed over, and I removed the last boxes. I received the charity’s written acknowledgement and my own appraisal paperwork for my tax records.

Managing my 14 unit building became impossible after my surgery. I hired an appraiser and my attorney reviewed the documents. You guys worked with the title company, notified tenants as required by law, and scheduled a closing date that fit everyone’s timelines. You handled the transfer and provided a written acknowledgement of the donation and all the paperwork my accountant needed. There were no surprise fees from the charity and the whole process felt right.

My storefront had been empty for years and the county notices were piling up. I got a certified appraisal and my accountant advised me on the tax forms. Giving Center coordinated with the county clerk and the title company to clear a small lien and record the transfer. They arranged a local crew to make the space safe and to remove debris. Last month I walked past and smelled coffee from the new café. That smell felt like closure.

I was the holder of a land contract my brother started before he died. The legal language made me anxious. I hired a lawyer, obtained the appraisal my tax preparer required, and the charity worked with our attorney to prepare the assignment documents. They coordinated with the county recorder so the transfer could be recorded cleanly. I got a written acknowledgement from the nonprofit and copies of the recorded deed for my files.

Giving up the house where my grandmother taught me to sew felt like giving up a piece of myself. I paid for a preservation‑aware appraisal and my lawyer reviewed the covenants. The nonprofit connected me with a preservation partner and handled the scheduling and logistics for the closing through a local title company. They provided a written acknowledgement and a clear description of how the property will be used. Months later I saw an art class advertised in the drawing room and felt relieved. The house is being cared for and used, and I have the paperwork my accountant needed.

Vehicles
My 1967 Mustang was my father’s car and had seen better days and I just could not keep up with the maintenance. I had the car appraised by a qualified classic car appraiser and kept the paperwork. You guys arranged pickup, handled the title transfer with the DMV, and provided a written receipt at pickup for the donation. There were no surprise fees and they sent a photo of the car at a workshop where people learn restoration skills. Seeing that made me feel like the car’s best years were still ahead.

My old dodge truck had some issues and I honestly didn’t want to waste my time with DMV lines and paperwork. I spoke with your rep after filling out the form and did what you said: I got an independent appraisal and my accountant advised me on the tax forms needed. Your charity scheduled a convenient pickup, and provided a donation acknowledgement letter that described the truck and the date of transfer. Absolutely no issues during the entire donation and knowing I helped made me feel proud and relieved.

We inherited an RV with some engine issues that none of us could use. I hired an appraiser and our CPA reviewed the valuation. Giving Center offered free towing, coordinated the title transfer, and provided a donation receipt for our records. There were no fees charged by the nonprofit as they promised. Cool thing is I learned the RV is now a mobile clinic that visits rural neighborhoods. Thinking about nurses inside the same space that once held our family maps made us feel like the RV was doing the work it was meant to do.

After an accident I could not ride anymore. I arranged an appraisal and kept it for my tax preparer. Giving Center scheduled the pickup, handled the title transfer, and provided the paperwork I needed for my tax deduction. They kept me updated by phone and email. The motorcycle was used to raise funds for a trauma recovery program. Letting it go felt less like loss and more like giving someone else a chance.
Liam · Portland, ME
When my father passed we inherited an excavator, a skid steer, and a trailer. We hired an equipment appraiser and our estate attorney reviewed the paperwork. Giving Center coordinated a single pickup, worked with our attorney and the title company, and provided a detailed letter listing each item and the date of transfer. There were no surprises and we are deducting the equipment over the next 5 years. The equipment was sold for more then we were expecting which was a nice surprise. Glad to have helped!

Boats
I loved that boat, but after my husband passed it was too much to manage. They offered fast free towing, handled the title, and picked it up within a week, plus I didn’t have to lift a finger. The transporter was compassionate and the team kept me informed every step of the way. The tax paperwork was simple and the money supports veteran programs. It felt like the boat got a second life and my husband would be happy to know it helped a good cause.

After my divorce the sailboat was more burden than joy. I paid for a qualified marine appraisal and my attorney reviewed the transfer documents. Giving Centers transporter coordinated with the marina, scheduled transport, and mailed me a written donation receipt for my tax records. They kept me informed by phone and email. Overall a good experience and I’m happy to have moved on and helped your charity keep doing good in this crazy world.

I wanted to donate our 3 jet ski’s but didn’t want any hidden towing or storage fees. I had a local marine appraiser value them and kept the paperwork. The charity offered free towing, picked them up the next day, and gave me a receipt for the donations. The jet ski’s helped fund a few causes I care about and the speed and clarity of the process removed every hesitation I had.

My boat trailer had just been taking up space in my yard for a couple years after my boat sunk. I called your charity and as advised, obtained a valuation and my tax preparer advised me on the forms I needed. You scheduled the pickup, handled the title transfer, and gave me the needed paperwork. Thanks!
Nora · Duluth, MN
Donating a houseboat felt complicated because of marina rules and environmental checks. I worked with my attorney and a marine surveyor to document condition and value. Giving Center coordinated with the marina manager, arranged a careful tow, and provided a written acknowledgement of the donation. Everything went smoothly and I hope the next owner loves it as much as we did!
Gavin · Seattle, WA
Donating a yacht felt complicated, but the team at Boats with Causes made it shockingly easy. They handled the FAA/Coast Guard paperwork, coordinated the sale, and took care of the closing so I didn’t have to deal with brokers. Everything was transparent, no surprise fees, and they explained the tax benefit in plain language. It’s a relief to know such a large gift is already making a real difference.

Collectibles, art and jewelry
I inherited vintage brooches and rings my grandma inherited from her family in Portugal and did not want to sell them online. I had a certified jewelry appraiser document provenance and value. The charity arranged secure pickup and provided a written receipt that described the items and the date of transfer. The proceeds supported a battered women’s shelter and I feel like I honored my grandmother.
Christina · Newark, NJ
I had antique furniture and I did not want it to end up at a yard sale. I hired a certified appraiser, paid for and kept the written report, and I sent the charity the appraisal as they requested. Giving Center arranged free pickup and consigned everything with an auction house they regularly work with, so I did not have to manage shipping or storage. After the sale they sent a written acknowledgement of my donation and an itemized accounting showing the sold price, the auction house fees, and the net amount that went to the charity. The proceeds funded veteran programs and emergency housing, and the documentation I received was exactly what my accountant required.

Donating a painting felt risky because I worried about authenticity and damage in transit. I paid for authentication and a formal appraisal and kept the reports for my records. The charity arranged insured pickup that handled the packing and shipping, and managed the sale process so I did not have to coordinate logistics. After the sale they sent a donation receipt and an itemized statement showing the final sale amount, the gallery commission, and the net proceeds that went to support animal welfare programs. I am very happy knowing the gift helped fund a cause I care deeply about and it made the whole decision feel right.

I had 17 long boxes of graded comics and kept every grading report from CGC and CBCS. I scheduled a pickup through your Collectibles with causes website and you had a transporter come pick everything up after I came back from my vacation. When the comics were all sold I received a donation receipt and a statement showing gross receipts, selling fees, and net proceeds, plus the invoices my accountant needed. Part of the collection was sold to fund veteran programs and part was used to fund after‑school reading kits. The documentation was complete and straightforward.
Ethan · Columbus, OH
I inherited my dad’s football and baseball card collection, multiple signed balls and jerseys, and did not want to deal with auctions. Giving Center asked for an inventory and scans of any grading certificates for the key pieces, so I emailed those documents and kept the originals. After they looked everything over and accepted the collection and I had the entire lot appraised and scheduled a pickup on a Saturday when i was available. When everything was complete I received a packet of paperwork which had a donation receipt with the transfer date, a transaction statement showing gross receipts, fees, and net proceeds, and the invoices my accountant needed. The process took roughly 9 weeks from pickup to final paperwork, and the funds were used to help a variety of issues we care about.

A box of rare coins sat in my safe for years. I used a reputable numismatist for an appraisal and kept the report. The charity arranged secure transport and provided a written acknowledgement of the donation. Zero issues, would donate again.

Aircraft
I loved flying that single‑engine plane, but maintenance and hangar costs became impossible. I hired a qualified appraiser and my attorney reviewed the transfer documents. The charity coordinated with a title company that handles aircraft and with the FAA registry to ensure the registration transfer was completed properly. They arranged a careful pickup and provided a written acknowledgement of the donation.
Marta · Green Bay, WI
Donating our business jet felt overwhelming at first. The charity recommended an independent appraisal for tax and transfer purposes, and we arranged a pre‑donation inspection and a title search. The charity coordinated pickup, and handled the FAA registration transfer. When the transfer closed I received one clear packet: the executed donation agreement, the appraisal, the closing statement, the FAA transfer confirmation, and the donation acknowledgement with the transfer date. The funds support good causes, and the straightforward paperwork and professional handling made a large, complicated gift feel secure.
André · Fort Lauderdale, FL
I arranged the helicopter donation as part of my estate plan. My estate attorney coordinated the appraisal and title transfer, and the charity worked with our counsel to accept the gift after probate clearance. The charity provided copies of the executed transfer documents, the appraisal summary, and a dated acknowledgement for my estate records.
Nick · San Diego, CA
I built that kit plane over weekends, so donating it was emotional and I feared a mess of FAA forms. They handled the FAA transfer, arranged the appraisal, and even picked up the plane immediately. The team was patient, answered all my questions, and provided an official tax receipt. It’s comforting to see the plane used to help such a good charity.
Ben · Flagstaff, AZ
My ultralight was a hobby I could not safely fly anymore. I obtained an appraisal and my attorney prepared the transfer paperwork. Giving center arranged pickup, handled the FAA registration transfer, and provided a written acknowledgement of the donation. I received my donation paperwork for my accountant in less than 2 months.
Sam · Asheville, NC
I had a hangar full of spare parts I didn’t want to throw away. The organization handled pickup, I cataloged everything, and they took care of the FAA paperwork for donated equipment. They were very professional and sent an itemized receipt so I knew exactly what I could claim. Some of those parts are now keeping training aircraft flying and I am happy to help veterans and students learn to fly safely.

Business, digital and financial gifts
I wanted to donate crypto but worried about tax reporting and volatility. I transferred 0.27 bitcoin and 0.84 ether to the charity’s designated wallet, and I obtained a fair market valuation snapshot from my tax advisor at the time of transfer. Giving Center provided a written acknowledgement that described the transfer date and the wallet address. They did not value the donation for tax purposes. My accountant used my valuation and the charity’s acknowledgement to complete the forms. The funds support a good cause and the speed of the transfer made the gift feel immediate.
Jordan · Boulder, CO
I transferred my small apparel trademark to Giving Center. My attorney prepared the assignment and handled the USPTO filing; I covered the filing and recording fees. You guys worked with my attorney to complete the assignment, provided an executed assignment and the filing receipt, and issued a written acknowledgement of the transfer. I retained the original assignment and filing confirmation for my files.
Lauren · Portland, OR
I had a patent for a diagnostic method I would not commercialize. My attorney prepared the assignment and I obtained an independent valuation for estate purposes. Giving center worked with my lawyer to accept the assignment and provided a written acknowledgement of the transfer. Months later I received a report showing the method being piloted in low‑cost clinics. Knowing my work could help people who otherwise would not have access made the legal work worth it.
Wei · Boston, MA
We faced mounting storage fees for specific slow‑moving SKUs and wanted to avoid waste. The items included 1,260 winter coats, 845 ceramic mugs, and 390 boxed LED lamps. We had our inventory manager prepare a detailed list and valuation for our accountant. The Giving center arranged a bulk pickup, documented the SKUs and quantities, and provided a written acknowledgement listing the items and the date of transfer. The goods were redistributed to community centers and shelters, and we avoided storage penalties while helping people in need.
