How it works

You make one phone call. We do the heavy lifting.

Most donors are surprised by how little is asked of them. There is no listing, no showing, no repair work, no haggling and no fee charged by us. Here is the whole process.

1

Tell us about it

Fill out the short form or call us. Condition rarely matters — we accept vehicles that do not run and property that needs work.

2

We handle the details

Our team schedules free towing or arranges collection, prepares the transfer documents and coordinates every signature. You sign; we chase the rest.

3

You get your receipt — a family gets help

We send the documentation you need at tax time, and the value of your gift goes to work funding the causes on this page.

  • Free towing, and collection for larger donations in most cases
  • No brokers, no listing fees, no commissions
  • Titles, deeds and liens handled in‑house

Not sure it qualifies?

If it has value and you no longer want it, ask us. We’ve processed thousands of computers and handled everything from working farms to corporate computer cages, long boxes of graded comics, commercial buildings, and boats of every kind — motorboats, sailboats, houseboats, fishing boats, and yachts. We keep a pilot on staff who flies donated aircraft out himself.

Want to decide where it goes, later?

A donor advised fund lets you give now, take the deduction now, and direct support to the causes you care about over time. It suits donors coming off a high‑income year, and anyone giving a large asset who would rather not choose its destination against a deadline. You can add to the same fund in later years, and name a family member to carry the giving on after you.

Who your gift reaches

Know exactly where the value of your donation goes

Giving Center exists to fill the gaps that larger programs leave behind — the family two weeks from eviction, the classroom with no computers, the veteran who needs a working truck to get to a job. Your donation funds real, specific needs across all 50 states and, through our partners, around the world.

Your benefit

Stop paying to keep it, and claim the deduction you have earned

An unused asset is rarely free. There are taxes, insurance, storage, maintenance, HOA and slip fees, and the quiet cost of the time it takes to sell. Donating ends all of it in one step — and because Giving Center is an IRS‑approved 501(c)(3), your gift is fully tax deductible.

Fair market value, not cost basis. Long‑term capital gain property is generally deductible at its full fair market value, up to 30% of your adjusted gross income.

Five years to use it. If the value exceeds that annual cap, the balance carries forward for up to five consecutive tax years — a large gift is rarely wasted.

No capital gains, no recapture. Giving rather than selling avoids federal and state capital gains and depreciation recapture on an asset that has grown in value.

Paperwork prepared for you. We execute the donee acknowledgment on your Form 8283, and file Form 8282 if we sell the asset within three years. Your accountant gets an audit‑ready file.

A higher cap, if it suits you. Electing to deduct cost basis instead of fair market value raises the annual limit to 50% of AGI. Which way is better depends on your numbers — we will walk your accountant through both.

In more detail: deduction limits and carryforward · avoiding capital gains · how Form 8283 works.

What “fair market value” actually means

Fair market value is simply the price your item would change hands for between a willing buyer and a willing seller. It is the basis of most charitable deductions — and it is worth understanding before you give.

Be cautious of any charity that promises you a deduction figure up front. A deduction becomes real once your donation is sold, gifted onward to another nonprofit or an individual in need, or kept by the charity for its charitable work. We will always tell you plainly which of those applies to your gift.

One cost we cannot cover. For non‑cash gifts valued above $5,000, the IRS requires a qualified independent appraisal, arranged and paid for by the donor. That is an IRS rule, not a Giving Center fee, and the appraiser must be independent of us. We will tell you on the first call whether your gift is likely to need one.

Giving Center is a nonprofit charity, not a tax advisor. This page is general information, not tax advice — please confirm your own situation with a qualified tax professional.

In their own words

Hear from donors who thought it would be complicated

“I called Giving Center and a really nice lady named Stephanie explained the process in plain language. Within three weeks the deed was recorded, the keys were handed over, and I removed the last boxes.”

Evelyn · Inherited house · Portland, OR

“I loved that boat, but after my husband passed it was too much to manage. They offered fast free towing, handled the title, and picked it up within a week, plus I didn’t have to lift a finger.”

Claire · Boat · Newport, RI

“There were no surprise fees and they sent a photo of the car at a workshop where people learn restoration skills. Seeing that made me feel like the car’s best years were still ahead.”

Frank · 1967 Mustang · St. Louis, MO

Common questions

These are the questions our team hears most on the first phone call. If yours is not here, ask us directly — we would rather answer it than have you guess.

Browse the full FAQ library →

Is donating really free? Are there any costs at all?

Giving Center charges you nothing to accept your donation. Towing, collection of larger lots and vehicles, title and deed transfer, closing paperwork and our staff’s time are all covered by us. There are a few costs we cannot cover, and we would rather you hear them from us now than discover them later.

The first is appraisal. When a non‑cash gift is valued above $5,000, the IRS requires a qualified independent appraisal, arranged and paid for by the donor. That catches a good share of real estate, aircraft, boat and RV gifts, so it is not a rare situation. The appraiser has to be independent of the charity, so it is not something we are allowed to pay for or provide.

The second is shipping on smaller items. Donors usually send those at their own cost, and that cost is generally deductible to you as part of the gift — we arrange and pay for collection where a donation is large enough to need a truck. The third comes up occasionally on property — an unusual lien payoff, for example. Where anything like that applies, we tell you before a single document is signed, not after. We will flag all of them on your first call.

How long does the whole process take?

Vehicles, computers and smaller items are often picked up within a week. Real estate depends on the property — unpaid taxes, liens or title issues add time, and we work through those for you. We will give you an honest estimate on the first call rather than a number designed to make you say yes.

Will you take something that is broken, or property with a mortgage?

Very often, yes. Cars that will not start, boats that need work and homes that need repairs are all things we see every week. Property with a mortgage or back taxes is reviewed case by case — sometimes the equity is enough to make the gift work. Ask; the answer is free.

How much can I deduct?

That depends on the asset, what happens to it after your gift and your own tax situation — which is why no charity should quote you a figure up front. We give you accurate documentation of what your donation was and what became of it, and your tax professional uses that to determine your deduction.

Can I choose which cause my donation supports?

You can tell us what matters to you and we will do our best to direct your gift accordingly. Donors who want formal, ongoing control over where their giving goes usually open a donor advised fund with us.

Why do some links send me to a different website?

Over 20 years we built dedicated teams and sites for the assets we handle most — real estate, vehicles, boats, computers, collectibles and aircraft. They are all part of Giving Center under the same EIN. You are welcome to start your donation here and we will route you internally, or go straight to the specialist site.

One decision today, and someone’s hardest year gets easier
